Over 1,500 animals and 1,000 plant species fill the 110 acres of Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, providing the opportunity for patrons to explore creatures with origins circling the globe. One of its top exhibits is the Plains of East Africa, where visitors can traverse a quarter-mile boardwalk that looks down onto open plains areas holding animals including crocodiles, antelopes and cheetahs. After watching the animals that fill the zoo, children can explore and cool off at the Play Park and Splash Ground, and families can attend an educational, entertaining Keeper Talk or take a train ride around the zoo. Set on the opposite side of the mouth of the Trout River from the city, the zoo is about seven miles by car from downtown.
