Preserving the site of a 1564 French fort and village, the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve & Fort Caroline National Memorial features a 1/3-scale model fort, built from the designs found in antique sketches. The visitor center gives further information about the 46,000-acre, multi-location preserve, with museum-style displays on the region's natural history, European exploration of the area and the site's native Timucua Indian culture. The memorial and visitor center are about 13 miles northeast of downtown Jacksonville, beside the Hidden Hills Country Club.
